How to maintain your lawn well ?

Like all plants, the grasses of your turf have an imperative need for certain elements. These are water, air, light and nutrients. These four elements are essential in everyday life, they allow the herbaceous plants to grow and to be in good health. The lawn care is used to ensure that the lawn always has water and nutrients, and have access to light. In addition, this limits the presence of undesirable (pests, weeds, etc.).

To grow, the grass will draw into the soil from the water and nutrients. Mainly nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and also other elements in smaller amounts: calcium, magnesium, iron, sulfur etc. Then, to feed, the grass, using the sunlight and the water that it has just captured, will transform the carbon dioxide (CO2) of the air into carbohydrates. This process is called photosynthesis.

It is clear that the four elements (water, air, light, nutrients) are essential to the health of your lawn. Without light, no photosynthesis, no nutrients, no growth etc. The lawn maintenance phase is therefore used to prevent one of the elements from missing, so that the herbaceous plants are always healthy.

To maintain your lawn well, here are the main tasks to do:
Mow her lawn: to avoid choking herbaceous and give a beautiful appearance to the lawn. Remember to use best zero turn lawn mower.

Weed control: to remove unwanted plants (weeds, moss) that would eventually invade your land.
Watering your lawn: to provide herbaceous plants with sufficient water and to compensate for periods of drought.
Fertilize your lawn: to bring nutrients to the herbs, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
Scarify its land: to remove the layer of felt and foam that chokes the herbaceous.

Aerate the soil: to allow the roots of herbs to better capture water and nutrients by decomposing the soil.
Grass turf: to bring nutrients to herbaceous plants and to modify the structure of the soil.
Roll the soil: to compact the soil, reduce the air pockets and put the blades of grass back into the ground.
Each maintenance task is special: it takes place at a given time and frequency (see for some at a specific time of the day), is done with some equipment, requires special precautions Etc.

Let’s see each of these lawn care tasks a little more in detail. In this article, we will discuss about mowing and weeding first!
Mowing the lawn

Mowing your lawn is probably the most common lawn care task. In France, the average lawn is cut 15 to 30 times a year. This frequency depends on the use made of its land, the climate and the varieties of herbaceous plants that have been planted.

This task obviously makes it possible to obtain a clean lawn, with the neat appearance. If one does not realize it, on the contrary, one gets very quickly a land with the neglected aspect.

But for this aesthetic aspect, why mow its lawn?
On the one hand because it favors cutting. This phenomenon, peculiar to different plant species, makes it possible to obtain several stems from the cutting of a single one. It is a bit like cutting a branch of a tree, and instead two new branches are growing. Mowing her lawn therefore increases the number of herbs on her land. Thus, the clumps of herbaceous grass will appear dense, thicker, more compact.

On the other hand, mowing her lawn helps fight weeds. Indeed, when you pass the mower, you cut not only the grasses, but also the weeds. These often reproduce by sowing seeds. So by cutting them before they could reproduce, you limit their spread, and even you eliminate them. Increasing the density of the lawn can also deprive these weeds of light, water or nutrients, which will also lead to their extinction.

Weeding
This is without a doubt the most thankless task of lawn care. Who is it that stimulates the weeds that grow in the grass? Not much, apart from may be the promise of a homogeneous, dense lawn, devoid of parasitic plants.
However, weeding is a particularly beneficial operation for the health of your lawn.

Indeed, what are weeds? In the end, these are plants that come naturally to implant on your lawn. These undesirables are therefore the “historical” inhabitants of your land. Those who were there before you turned the ground over and did not plan your lawn. And unlike the herbaceous plants on your lawn, which you had to sow, plant, water etc., they did not need human intervention to develop.

Also, what will happen if you do not remove them? Who will win, between the weed “who manages” and the herb “who needs you”? Surely the weed! It will reproduce, smother the other plants, and colonize all your land slowly but surely. They leave with an advantage: they are accustomed to climatic conditions, soil texture, degree of precipitation etc.

Weeding the ground thus makes it possible to fight against this invasion, and at the same time to obtain a beautiful and homogeneous grass. It is an important operation in lawn care, which should not be overlooked. But techniques exist to alleviate this painful work.
